Re: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] Interesting, 3 phase in the UK

Hi List,

Having first checked with Bill (list Mom) I was going to write a reply to
the points Jon has made but Jan Rowland has covered most of the physical
points except the danger. Bill also wants this discussion dead or moved to
one of the other groups. I ask you not to reply to this post on this list.

As Jan has pointed out our electrical system here is entirely different to
the States and we even have different voltages to Europe. Our electrical
system is lethal and should not be played with without some knowledge.

Single phase here comes from one leg of a three-phase system and neutral
which is also sometimes connected to the earth at the point of delivery.
Three-phase is just the whole balanced supply brought into the property.

A static converter here is more than just a few large caps. Mine contains
two very large transformers and caps and is quite capable of running my
whole workshop at once. I only got three-phase in because I bought a
three-phase CNC lathe that took its single phase controller power from the
three-phase supply and it proved much easier.

My last word on this subject is for British members. While the American's,
on this list, are very helpful and knowledgeable on most subjects, few of
them have been here and may not appreciate that there are differences
between our systems and some of the things they do will turn out to have
catastrophic consequences. It would be no good trying to explain to the
insurance company the reasons your house burnt down was because you took
advice from one of our colonial cousins.
Regards,

Terry

| John: Isn't three-phase in England balanced 415 Volts between legs? Each
| leg is then 240 V. to earth???
|
| We Yanks have "open delta" which is 240 V. between legs, two of them are
120
| V. to neutral, and one, used ONLY as one of the three phases in 3-phase,
is
| called the "high leg" and is about 200 Volts to neutral.
|
| We also have "balanced three-phase" which is 208 between phases, and any
of
| the three phases is 120 V. to neutral.
|
| This is, of course, NOT including the 480 3-phase used in vast factories,
| etc.
