The really horrible downside to stepper motors is inductance. And, bigger
motors have even more inductance than the smaller motors. The only way
to fight inductance is with more voltage. If your power supply is not up
to the full rated voltage of the stepper driver, look into increasing the
voltage. If you drivers are unipolar, look into bipolar drivers. If your
motors have a choice between series and parallel connection, reconnect
them in parallel if your drivers can supply the current.
