The Gecko is a bipolar driver.

This should help the mid speed problem, if the motor skips steps at a speed
where the current limit is still in play.

Ah, but it doesn't need to supply 6.3 Amps, except during rapid accelerations
or running at high speed under load. Anyway, you can try it for a short
time and see if the lost steps problem is improved. If so, then you can look
into getting a bigger power supply.
