Thank You for your response.
I am looking first to make routed wood positives for bronze and aluminum
sand casting.
I have fairly good computer knowledge, but do not know the workings of the
parallel port and getting signals out without destroying the computer.
The last experience I had with this was witha TRS 80 with an opto isolator
board which had relays attached to it which we used to control an electric
train.
As a future goal, I haver a BRAND NEW Lincoln TIG 355 which I would like to
be able to do some automated welding with.
So, perhaps this is enough to start.
God BLess,
martin

Hi Martin,
way too little information.
you need to make some decisions.
do you want to learn ? or do you have an end product in mind ?
a CNC lathe offers way different parts than a CNC pick and place
machine. And neither does what a CNC router does.
Next, are you just learning ? a very fast way to get something is to
buy a 'kit' 3 steppers and controller, and throw together a simple
carrage of some sort.
IF you are mechanically challenged ( no access to lathes and mills)
you need simple plans for a machine. the less accuracy the lower
price. and if you are just learning, cheap is better. if you have a
particular end result, don't scrimp. buy the best, now. the option
is to spend on junk now and by the good stuff later. either way you
will buy the good stuff.
free software is turboCNC to get started, Master5 is windows based
and is pretty innexpensive ($100.00 when last I looked) EMC is free,
but linux adds a level of complexity you may not want.
Then, search this list for your topic. Most likley it's in there
somewhere. and the research will clue you in to the ideas of how the
pro's have done it.
