POWER SUPPLIES

I've gotten some really good advice from this group on how to get started, but I still need to come up with a power supply. Are the electrical engineers out there the only ones building their own, or are there schematics out there for less knowledgeable persons like myself? One expert has pointed me to a 24v, 8.5amp supply for $60 that should match my planned configuration. That doesn't sound too expensive, I guess, but I was wondering if there was a cheaper way (or a surplus source maybe). My internet searches have yielded unbelievably high prices.
