Thanks for the advice, Tim. The white papers you pointed me to are very informative. After checking out the power supply in question, it is a switching power supply (rats!). Here's the url if anyone wants to look at it: http://www.mpja.com/product.asp?product=12613+PS I sure don't need extra headaches right now, so I guess I'm still on the hunt for a power supply and information about them. I will take your advice and do some more searching through the group's posts. Anyone with a good source for a 24v linear power supply is welcome to help me out.

search on the website. The best reference I can point you to is the stepper
white papers on the Gecko Drive site.
http://www.geckodrive.com/ycom/documents/C163R16_power_supplies.pdf will
take you to the power supply section, but I would recommend the complete
white paper as must type reading.
$60 for a 24 v 8.5 amp supply is a good deal if it is a linear supply and
not a switcher. Switch type supplies can be made to work, but sometimes will
cause you additional troubles you don't need as a beginner. Better to stick
with a linear supply.

but I still need to come up with a power supply. Are the electrical
engineers out there the only ones building their own, or are there
schematics out there for less knowledgeable persons like myself? One expert
has pointed me to a 24v, 8.5amp supply for $60 that should match my planned
configuration. That doesn't sound too expensive, I guess, but I was
wondering if there was a cheaper way (or a surplus source maybe). My
internet searches have yielded unbelievably high prices.
