Randy,

Agreed it can work well and many systems are designed with switcher
supplies. But, there have been a number of list members that tried it and
had problems as well. It all depends upon how the switcher is regulated and
how it handles the way a chopper drive draws current. For the most part
switchers are built to supply a very steady current draw. Chopper drives on
the other hand will draw current in a very erratic manner. Not all switchers
will handle it well. Also depends upon how the drive reacts to the
particular switcher. When all parts are designed to go together it can be
made to work perfect. When just buying surplus and sticking it together it
can be a potential pitfall. You can't go wrong with a linear so I consider
it a more reliable approach for a beginner.
