Seth,
you are right in that rotating nuts require a good bit of expensive
engineering
and machining work. Rotating nuts generally have to be rated for that
use.... it usually means some degree of dynamic balancing and attention
to grease flow with the acceleration forces.
But they sure can be high performance!
For the conventional approach just use a larger diameter higher lead
screw. A 0.625 screw 60 inches long is getting kinda dicy with awfully
low critical speed and buckling load. I read 350 lb max load and
220 ipm critical speed fixed fixed.
A 1" screw with 0.5" lead gives 3000 lb buckling load and 975 ipm
critical speed fixed fixed. It is still pretty respectable fixed simple.
