Well, I'm far from an expert. But the machine I bought to modify,
a cybermation 8'x12' router uses rack & pinion and I've gotten absurdly high
feed rates (1200 ipm on my y axis) r&p is self cleaning, and accuracy is
pretty
good. I've cut corian, aluminum, steel, wood, pvc and nearly anything else
you can
think of that will fit on the table, and Ive had great results.

And stone...glass...plastics (did I also mention that I am
going to try to put a milling head on the machine?)....maybe
metal.. :)
