Dear List Mom...
I have to call you on this point.....
Mother does not always know best, as bad little boys sometimes
know.....
A lot of people start from a position of knowing something about
tools. Ok - a little about tools. Like where the switch is, where
to put the sharp end, and how to write checks for drill bits. Power
tools have gotten much better over time, so people really know more
than times past.. Many want to more that use Dremel Tools....
But...... To understand machining takes a lot of learning... A life
time's learning to do it right. If you have been doing this a while,
you might forget that... Most people wondering into this site may
not have that knowledge. Or they might know a few things - but not
the broad array of things required to be a competant machinist and
CNC hacker...
Without some knowlegeable foundation books I am not going to go far
in this area. There isn't a class I can take to learn this. Can't
study as an Apprentice. Too old to change jobs and start machining
for a living. I put in 91 hours last week at work. 75 the week
before.... what class am I going to take?
So I can buy books and study. Get old equipment, bring it up to
snuff and use it.....
Fundamental to doing any of that is the accuracy and precision of my
tools.... So I *did* buy the old broken down BP II and some used SBL
16s. Now to bring them up and get them spiffy.... so I can screw my
5-phase Vextas on them. I can do the electronics - can even buy
some really great stuff.... but how do I bring my equipment in line?
So I sent Ken a check - and await my MTRB. Scraping ways is
OK.,.... If it helps me get from .025 to .002-.003 - then I am
happy...
I read John's comment not as a complaint - it's not. It is just an
observation that this book is a part of the answer - but not the
whole one. You need to read a few more books to understand and do
this stuff too.... And they are very, very hard to find the needed
ones.
So - I see his comment as totally on topic. CNC without accuracy is
probably useful in tootbrushs and Mattel toys. To get to where we
need to be - whether hobby or business... you need to understand the
technolgy of precision.
Common to all topics of CAD - CAM - EDM and DRO is precision and
control. Core of that is.... repeatable accuracy. Its so
fundamental that Juran defines quality as a measure of "adherence to
a standard".
So - thanks John. It's on topic to me. I would prefer to get more
accurate tools - and I already have an electic toothbrush... People
need to know more in ordet to keep the '45 Monarch precise.. Then we
will do neat stuff....
