John ....
what would you recommend then?
It would seem obvious that a fairly small core group is keenly
interested in learning everything they can about bringing back old
machine tools to life... either to use or just for the art...
At times, we (US) can almost understand trainspotting, too... but
then we get a grip 'on and tune in on Discovery Channel... :>
I found Sparey's book (The Amateur's Lathe) - but have not been
successful in getting Tubal Cain's works here.... Plenty in the UK,
of all his works, but not in the US or Canada.
Simple fact is that we can't use the apprentice system any more -
effectively - and have to learn any way we can. For me it was buy
machine and jump in. But there is so MUCH to learn..
So a book on scraping gets to the fundamentals of bringing a machine
back... Yahoo searches on RUST are almost a hobby for some, too...
the CNC part becomes a big part of all this, but getting the machine
to fundamentally perform to know specs - and repeatable specs - is
core of reliable CNC too...
I found Joe Martin's book excellent reading - and have done so
repeatedly.
So what else do you suggest?
