Sadly, I think most of the real knowledge on this topic has been largely
passed along via apprenticeships, and that very few if any books on the
subject have ever been printed. There are none on the subject of overall
machine rebuilding that I am aware of. I've collected close to 200
metalworking related books and am always looking for books on this
subject. Outside of tapping the vast collective knowledge available here
and other online forums, I'd say School of Hard Knocks is about the only
other recourse these days.

To be fair to Machine Tool Reconditioning, there's no point in
rebuilding the mechanical bits of a machine unless the ways are straight
and true. When that book was first published, the knowledge to do the
rest of the reconditioning was still pretty common while scraping has
always been something of a mystery to most.
Times change, and it's ironic that the knowledge once assumed common is
becoming scarce.
