Have to agree.
About 12 years ago while employed in a sheetmetal shop, I was tasked
with fixing up an old Brown and Sharpe surface grinder the owner had
bought. This had automatic table and crossfeed which didn't work well
due to extreme wear of the shafts and bearings. I did a nice job of
remaking shafts and turning new bushings.
Oiled everything up real well as the machine was reassembled. Upon
starting it up, I was very gratified to see both feed mechanisms working
very nicely. For about 30 seconds, after which things quickly bound up.
I was lucky I was able to get it back apart for post mortem. Table wear
had dropped the center line of a critical bushing, and it seized to the
shaft.
Yeah, that's obvious in retrospect, but the point being that a book on
reconditioning machine tools ought to point out stuff like this. There's
a lot more to rebuilding machinery than simply restoring way surfaces.
