With the G320, the steps in = encoder counts. If you give it 1000 steps
in one
direction, and the motor has a 250 cycle/rev encoder (which gives 1000
counts
/rev) the motor will turn the encoder one revolution, exactly. If the
motor is
directly coupled to the encoder, they both move one turn. If the motor was
driving something with a belt reduction, say, and the encoder was on the
driven part, then the encoder would make the one revolution, and the
motor would
turn whatever amount was needed to make the encoder do that.

The G340 is the same as the G320, plus a step multiplier. So, you can
multiply
the steps input to it by 2, 5 or 10. So, with the multiplier set for X
5, then you
could give it 200 step pulses to get the 1000 encoder counts of movement.
The advantage to this is that mtors with high encoder resolution can be
made to
spin fast without requiring high step rates from the computer. The
disadvantage,
of course, is lower resolution of the movement.
