Go to www.automationdirect.com. They have 38mm diameter industrial grade
encoders for $71.00. Resolutions of 100 to 2500 lines, 5vdc differential
outputs.
Make sure to check out the hollow shaft versions as they eliminate flex
couplings and such. I've used lots of these encoders on machining centers
that needed conversion from resolvers to accommodate new controls. These
encoders are dust proof only so you'll need to protect them in some type of
housing. Since they're small, we've been able to stuff them in most motor
housings.

There are larger sized industrial encoders (50mm dia.) available at
automation direct for $100-150 as well. Be aware that they have a shaft
speed limitation of 3000 rpm.
