Yes, I meant that the Y behavior was entirely normal, and the lack
of a light on X was definitely related.

Maybe. If the X LED is in SERIES with the LED in the driver's
optocoupler, then a problem with wiring or the driver could cause the
LED on the breakout board to not work.
