Good point. Although if I were designing a breakout board I'd
put the LEDs in parallel - that way you can see the state of
the outputs regardless of the drive design, or even if the
drive is disconnected.

To make the right troubleshooting decision, he needs to know
a little about his breakout board. He could disconnect the Y
drive and see if the Y light still works. If so, then the
dark X light points to the computer or port or cable, etc.
If not, then as you say, the drive or its connections could
also be at fault.
