SOME PC's boot all pins HI, some all LO, and even some random bits HI and LO
(but same pattern for each boot).

Before you purchase a gallows and some rope, go into DOS (or BASIC) and type
OUT 888,0 [ENTER], and see if that doesn't make all pins 2-9 "0".
then do same with OUT 888,255 and see if all pins 2-9 are not 5 V ("HI").
