In NT, 2000 or XP, the ports are protected from user mode access. DOS
programs can't access the port under the above Windows OS's. There is a
program
that allows you to do this, but I can't remember the name of it right now.
Otherwise, any program needs a DLL or other driver program to access
the port from real mode.
