Windows XP will NOT! allow direct access to the parallel port.
You have to use a driver.
Sucks! Sucks! Sucks!
I believe I've seen some freeware drivers on the web.
I've been told that they might take a lot of programming on your part.

Try booting up in DOS and try one of your DOS applications or try the
assembly code suggested by others and see if that works.
Windows 98 will allow direct access. I believe that was the last
version that did.

I use Mach2 on XP with great results.
