Thanks that clears things up, I've just been reading and really didn't know what was being talked about. This is neat, I'll have to try it sometime with a filed down tap. This opens up lots of possiblites.

No syncronization of the spindle is required, only the z axis
feed. The cutter is actually like lots of lathe threading tools in
a row or to put it another way like a form tool for a mill.

You can of course use taps in a mill with the correct attachment and
you can also do boring type operations to create threads but this is
different.
