They were not CNC machines, they were NC machines, slight difference
there. The first NC machine appeared at an IMTS show in Chicago
right around 1955.
Keep in mind, NC machines were a result of some of this:
world war 2
Helicopters
Quest for faster air planes
and difficult to machine tooling
NC and more currently CNC were originally intended to make complex
parts easier to machine. So, their roots are in "One-off"
manufacturing. Ever since I have been involved with CNC, I have
been fighting off the perception that CNC is for high-production
work. While it certainly can be used in production, it is very well
suited for one-off manufacturing.
