There is an attempt to revive the APT language. Visual CAM Script contains
an IDE for developing APT programs and includes an version of Personal APT.
The only downside is that all my APT manuals are on 5 1/4" floppies, low
density at that. If Bob could get a manual out, APT looks like a real
possibility. Look at www.cncfocus.com I have no connection, but would like
to use APT to generate G Code where SheetCAM doesn't cover it and I'm to
cheap to buy a 3D CAM system

Perhaps this was already talked about, but have you considered looking
at the old APT languages? This was what was used prior to CAD/CAM for
a high level language. It was a very powerful language for
programming a CNC machine of just about any number of axis - very cool
stuff, but frankly, CAD/CAM ate it alive when it appeared on the
market.
