That really depends on if the parts need to be milled or turned. Most CNC
turning centers are great for one off, or short run parts. If you need
thousands of each part then turning them with a multi spindle screw machine
with auxiliary tooling, is still the way to go for turned parts. If the
parts need to be milled then CNC is the way to go, short run or long run. I
still have several different manual mills that we use. But at some point I
will start converting mills to CNC or purchasing ready machining centers to
get the job done. You just cannot compete with a turning center, except for
maybe a one off part or several simple parts. I build and repair many
shafts and housings on a daily basis, I could not do this with CNC machines,
so there will always be a place for the manual machines. I have several
machines that are 50 to 60 years old. I have a couple that are pushing 100
years. But they are capable of doing things that I do in my business at
fraction of the cost of a new modern replacement. So I keep them around.
But if one wants to compete for production work then you have to modernize.

They were not CNC machines, they were NC machines, slight difference
there. The first NC machine appeared at an IMTS show in Chicago
right around 1955.
Keep in mind, NC machines were a result of some of this:
world war 2
Helicopters
Quest for faster air planes
and difficult to machine tooling
NC and more currently CNC were originally intended to make complex
parts easier to machine. So, their roots are in "One-off"
manufacturing. Ever since I have been involved with CNC, I have
been fighting off the perception that CNC is for high-production
work. While it certainly can be used in production, it is very well
suited for one-off manufacturing.
