The spec on the modbus site says it needs to be RS485, and that RS232 is
only for legacy support. (and it needs to support 9600 and 19.2k baud,
with 19.2k as the default)

Since it's serial though, it's pretty likely that standard RS232 will
work, since the software has no idea what physical layer is being used
(the software can't see past the UART).
