Dang.
For some good diagnostic and recovery stuff, check out
http://www.sysinternals.com
They have a DOS utility that will read NTFS files from a DOS boot.
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/NtfsDos.html
You may be able to back up your files with this.
Have you tried hitting [F8] just after the BIOS gets done? This should
bring up a menu offering different boot choices including Safe Mode.
If you need a DOS Boot disk, check out http://www.freedos.org/
DaveK's recommendations are also very good. Moving the drive into
another NTFS machine would be my first move.
