If your table were 6.5 inches wide and you could hold the part from
the other side, then your machine would need to be about 13 inches
wide, but the axis would only need to move the 6.5 inches. give a tad
if you want to cut out a part that would be 6.5 inches wide.

The spindle throat would need to be at least 6.5 inches from the column

Assuming your slides were at the very end of the 6.5 inches,then your
rails would need to be 13 inches as well.

If, you had a gantry, then the width would only need to be the 6.5
inches (plus a little for the tool width)

A gantry offers a smaller foot print, while a 'mill' would offer
easier part access, and even be able to do work on large parts that
would not fit in a gantry machine.
