Assuming you want a PCB router, and will use a Dremel, you can make a
dremel holder.

check E-bay for 'linear slide' these are small ball slide units that
you can find with anything between 1/4 inch and 6 inches of movement.
run about $35.00.

Very easy to make that into a Z axis.

and get some ideas.

the one that uses a pipe for the column is one I kninda like. only, I
would use two flanges on the base, and a Tee on one post and an elbo
on the other. That would dramaticcally increase stability of that axis.

if you are just starting out, then look at lots of machines to see
what is easy for you to make. sometimes you have tools or skills that
make something easier than what others might be able to do.
