What are you going to run for a spindle? Seems most printers don't have a
bunch of power, and to run steppers open loop, if underpowered might not be
a satisfactory implementation.
I am toying with doing something similar. I have about a pickup load of
printers, faxes, PSC etc. I haven't taken all apart yet, but some HP's run
a DC motor with an encoder wheel for paper feed and linear encoder for
across paper travel. Whereas, a Lexmark had 4 wire steppers in both places
and no encoder strips/wheels.
The Lexmark is stripped down to a place where it would feed a single sheet
and still do across paper travel. But if I were to use as an etcher of
something more rigid than paper, I'd have move that whole printer frame - or
my version of it - lots more inertia there than the stepper was designed to
move. Or do you have a different idea??

I've started to scrounge up parts finally. I have gathered 2 HP
printers, and an Apex flat bed scanner. Out of these I've collected 5
steppers, some rods, a few cogged belts, a BUNCH of optical switches,
and a handful of other odds and ends. I found the data sheets on the
steppers, but I don't understande the torque charts. Can someone help
me? Here are the links: M42SP-4
