You can pick up scientific grade (pulnix, jai, sony...) black and
white CCD cameras on Ebay for peanuts and they can output composite,
stick that into the AV input of a small LCD handheld TV (available up
to 7") and you would have acceptable results I'm sure. You would need
to add some optics but this is not too difficult, you know the CCD
array size generally, you know how big an area you want to look at so
you can work out the magnification you want from that and either buy
something or build it, ebay again can provide bargins, even the usual
"TV" lens on most CCD cameras will give pretty good closeups.
