It doesn't matter that the motor doesn't see the microsteps. The drive
is still counting them so you won't lose position. The only thing
affected is the shape of the current waveform.

At these high speeds the torque drops off sharply as the coil current
never actually reaches the set current. This is normal and happens with
all drive topologies. Increasing the supply voltage speeds up the
current rise so you can achieve higher step rates. This is why steppers
are always run at way over their rated voltage.
