Here is my point list:

1) at high RPM it is difficult for the rotation of a body to be
anything but smooth so the micro stepping at that point is not so
important.

2) Positionally the microsteps make no difference at high speed as you
can't stop the motor instantly, rather you ramp the speed down and at
the point the microsteps are useful, so you see the smoothness in the
acceleration/decelleration phase. As all moves contain one of each I
would say that microstepping is a good thing.

3) I gather there is less torque in a microstep then in a half or full
step so I assume that lost microsteps are a given but they still aid
motion.
