Thanks Randy, Based on what you say, I'm going to forget about the bellows business now I can move on with this thing.

John, the rubber material has a tendency to sag on its own weight. Whenever
the table closes up near to the end the rubber material bunches into a mess.
Buying things online has its pitfalls. I was thinking more on the lines
similar to bellows on old style cameras. I've found some, but the price is way to
high. Up to $400 just for enogth material I would need.
I didn't think about the p-trap business. Need to look into that.
thanks

Hi Bill,

What went wrong with the rubber material? Attaching it?
I use a rigged up thing with the shop-vac, but I hate the noise.
Plus the bellows wouldn't even work on my homemade machine.

I got some plumbing parts...P-Trap and an electrical conduit
strap and made that work..Don't know if that'd help you though.

Hi:

I can tell you from over 22 years experience working as a field engineer for
one of the largest machine tool builders for the woodworking industry that
as long as the wipers on the ball nut or lead nut and the wipers on the guide
bearings are intact, you won't have any problems caused by the wood dust.
Also, NOTHING you do can prevent the fine dust getting on the leadscrews and
guide bearings and it is this dust that tends to do the most damage. I have
seen machines that have been in production running 3 shifts a day, 5 to 6 days
a week for years with no protection except the wipers on the ball nuts and
guide bearings. If you want to protect the lead screws and the guides then you
should pay close attention to the wipers on them and make sure they are in
good shape. Otherwise nothing you put over them will stop wood dust from
getting on them and I mean NOTHING short of a perfectly sealed enclosure with
positive pressure inside it covering the screws and guides. That is pretty much
impossible to achieve.

I hope this helps some.
