Well it might pay to use what the normal CNC machines use. There's the
stabilastic Spring type like those found at

Or if you have a lathe then turning a nest of telescopic screw covers is
not difficult. Thats what my Hardinge uses, though they have a seal in
each section. But they never did anything by halves ;)

Or there's the fully boxed telescopic way covers, by far the most
expensive of difficult to do. Like these

Or the cheapest is probably a weighted drape over cover made from thick
rubber to cover the full width of the ways.
