It will depend on the servo motors and encoders you select. For
smaller lower voltage servo's you can use the Servo control drives
from Fred at IMserv.

For bigger motors (>5A or 30VDC) you need to look at the Gecko
320/340 series.


You will not be able to just bolt on new servo motors and drives. The
drive mechanics need to change. If the steppers are direct drive you
will need about a 3:1 belt reduction on the servo motors. It trades
speed you can't use for torque you can.

You might want to consider upgrading the stepper system you have with
a more modern one. A bipolar microstepping drive and new high torque
motors (like the 500 oz in 23 frame RS23-500 at wsww.homeshopcnc.com)
can turn in some pretty impressive results especially driven with the
right voltages.
