Listmembers have also had good luck with the Proxxon IB/E rotary tool:

which is cheaper, at ~$100. Not as good as a high quality air spindle, but
folk seem to be satisfied.

Along with rotary tools, people are also using laminate cutters. Dig through
the list archives or ask for firm suggestions, you'll get lots.

I'd also suggest you pick up some books, like a copy of Machinery's Handbook
and "Machine Shop Essentials" by Frank Marlow.
