I rarely mill at more than 5ipm. I sometimes
use a hogging mill taking a deep cut in aluminum. In that case I might
try to get as high as 2ipm. I can notice a speed reduction on the 2hp motor
on the mill so Im assuming the steppers must be working pretty hard to push
the cutter along.
I would look into this as you should be able to take that faster. however
full depth of cut is not usually a wise practice as it is hermful to your
spindle bearings and ways/ ballscrews it is much better to take a light doc
with a high spindle rpm and feedrate than to tax your machine that hard.
6061 has a tensile strength of about 62000 psi ( this is close just pulling
from my head) so you are looking at a lot of force directed into the
machine at that depth also I dont like waitng ten minutes for my machine to
home so speed is relative and essential.
