I know you can get complete Bridgeport 1J and 2J heads, but these often
go
for nearly as much as a complete machine. You just want the variable
speed drive section of the 2J equivalent, I gather. I would be
surprised
if this was totally identical with the Bridgeport, but there is a
possibility
it was made to be interchangeable. Really, the vari-speed section
only interconnects with a couple of parts. It has the upper part of the
direct drive clutch, which also has the pinion for the back gear.
These must both mate with the corresponding parts on the head.
The other part is the attachment to the head itself. I think there
is a cylindrical section on the belt housing that slips over a
cylindrical section of the head (but it could be the other way
round). And, there is a circular T-slot for the nuts that hold the
housing to the head. If these parts are made Bridgeport-compatible,
then the belt housing should be interchangeable. I wouldn't hold my
breath, or pay $750 for a rebuilt unit without knowing whether it would
fit!
Finally, the bearings in the belt housing are pretty pedestrian, and any
bearing shop should have them. It is not a very complicated job to
replace all the bearings. (The vari-speed is a bit more complicated
than the belt change version, though.)
