Yeesh, you have obviously not visited his shop. There is an "Atlas"
room, with
a huge pile of chucks in one corner, a pile of headstocks in another,
tailstocks
in the 3rd, and carriages in the 4th. Gears, handles, pulleys, etc. are
in shelves
in the middle. Or, anyway, it is something like that. I'll never
forget that PILE
of chucks!

In a real Bridgeport, you can't take out the back gear bull gear,
because it is also the
spline that drives the spindle, and half of the direct drive clutch.
So, there is a minimum
of 4 bearings in the belt housing that need to function. The entire
toothed belt and
back gear pinion could be removed or just disconnected, if you want. I
prefer to
have it functioning, as the motor goes pretty slow at 60 - 80 RPM with
the VFD.
I doubt there is enough torque for fly cutting and similar jobs with
direct drive.
But, the motor will definitely overheat at 10% RPM (thats 6 HZ) on long
cuts.
You could rig an external cooling blower to solve that.
