Do you disengage the direct drive clutch when engaging the back gear?
On real Bridgeport 1J heads, you have to flip TWO levers to get the back
gear to work.
One releases the direct drive clutch by raising the driven cone pulley
about .1".
The other drops a sliding pinion that engages the bull gear on the
spindle outer
spline part.
