I suspect there is something wrong with your friend's spindle or the
nut. My mill uses the nut. I just finished a job where I milled 1000 pcs
taking a 1.3 wide by .1 deep cut 6" long, 2800 rpm at 40"/min.
Milled both sides, so that's 2000 passes. Also cut 1000 .280 wide slots
1.2" deep into the edge of 3/8 al plate 3.5" long with a 4" carbide saw
at 2500 rpm. Made several hundred parts out of 440C stainless, have used
end mills from 2" shell mill down to 1/32, normal and high helix. Never
ever had one come loose, if anything, I have to lightly tap the holder
when it doesn't want to release.
