I have seen many thousands of dollars of destroyed parts due to
static electricity. Mostly in the winter (very low humidity), and all
with uncontrolled manual assembly conditions, and mostly about
15 years ago (though all definitely had protection diodes). I've never
destroyed one myself, but then I know what I am doing and don't
do obviously stupid things.

I'd rather see the extra $0.001 to have the pink or black bags
on all the parts so the peope who assemble stuff don't have
to think about it. Wrist bands with 1M resistors and anti-static
benches. You really don't have to do that much to eliminate the
possibility of destruction (or worse, damage that shows up later).
