Oh my gosh, it is the "how to remove the encoder disks" question again!!!
Actually I feel it is a good question and I learned a lot last time it was
discussed, but it was one of those topics that eventual led to a lively
debate concerning the usefulness of the discussion.
Here is what I remember of the conclusions:
Make a pair of long slotted wedges. Put them under the disk support rind and
squeeze them together to pop the disks off. I have used this method and it
worked very well. The wedges I made are about 5/8" or so wide and about 3"
long. The taper is from about 1/8" thick to the full thickness of 3/8" or
so. The slot down the middle is just wide enough to fit the shaft loosely. I
used a 1/2 tom arbor press to drive them together. There was someone on the
list that had an alternate method as they were concerned that the snap ring
inside the motor that the pressure is being applied against might break. I
don't remember the method as it seemed like more work and everyone that has
used the wedge method has been successful. BTW, you don't remove the
retaining ring or anything. You just press it all off at the same time.
I was playing with a way to make a take-up device and the easiest way to do
it is leave the disks on the motor and connect the motor up to 3 - 6 volts
or so. The current is low enough at that voltage (they are 24 v motors) that
nothing is harmed when they are stalled for a long period of time. You will
have to play with the voltage. You want the lowest you can get that will not
allow your cable or tape to go slack on take-up.
