The origins of probes like the ones we are discussing go back to the early
70's. Rolls Royce were having trouble measuring their turbine blades. 2D
measuring was not a problem but turbine blades are of course twisted along
their length and an absolute pig to measure with normal 2D instruments.
David McMurtry designed the original probe and then set up Renishaw's to
build and develop it. The firm keeps expanding mainly based on the original
product but as you can see from the web site we have fingers in all sorts
of high accuracy measuring products. About 90% of the products are exported
which is always popular with governments and many of the products can be
directly related to ideas which David McMurtry has hatched. Hence he is now
Sir David.
