Bill This is starting to give me a clue.....The hollow pulley was
something I hadn't thought of. Makes the spring much more feasible.
Your unit with an encoder should do very nicely.

Have you seen the BW electronics units I am talking about. John
(from the Uk) has said nice things about them. The idea seems more
sound than the pulley sliding along the wire to me. However as no
one else has jumped on it it makes me wonder. Do they see faults I
don't?

Do you remember if the unit used a wire spring or a flat ribbon
spring. Was there a guide to keep the wire spooling with out over
laps or did the tension take care of that.

Also is very thin aircraft cable in the .050 range or the .100 range?
