I think the only down side to this is the fact that the machine now needs
to accelerate more mass to make a move up or down. I've seen nitrogen springs
like the ones used on automotive hatch backs used on commercial CNCs. These
can be bought in various spring constants and stroke lengths from outfits
like <A HREF="www.reidtool.com">Reid tools</A> for approx 15 to 30 dollars
US.
