RE: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] List goals/aims/results?

Just want to post an observation from being on this list for almost 2 years.
The "hot" topics on this list will vary widely over time. While the
discussion at the moment may be heavy metal machines it is far from the
norm. For a particular topic to get a lot of attention it first has to get
raised (meaning if you are interested in something you have to speak up)
then it has to be of general interest to enough people to get some critical
mass. I remember when there were people that wanted to push all EMC
discussions to another list. It was decided that EMC was certainly on topic
and was kept on this list. After a while that discussion died out and CNC
Pro was the software that got all the conversation. That is just the way it
work.

Summary on this is if people want to talk about "home" machines then they
need to start talking and not spend time complaining that their interest is
not being discussed. I don't think anyone has been berated on this list (and
I know I have never done it) for wanting to build a starter machine. Yes,
they have been told that limitations of what they are considering, but that
should be useful feedback. No one want to keep anyone from building their
dream whether that is a 300 ipm heavy metal machine or a 5 ipm surplus parts
wonder.

Funny part is I appear to be getting grouped with the "commercial" types. I
am far from it. I earn my living managing a computer department and
programming for a company that provides marketing and data analysis support.
I have never sold a job using any of my machine tools and have no desire to
pursue it as a profession. My first CNC machine was a Sherline mill with a
Camtronics 5 amp controller and driven with DanCAD. My next machine is a
Shoptask using the same controller and first DeskNC DOS and then EMC. I am
now up to the Bridgeport. I have also built some CNC projects including an
automated test system for my model airplane hobby and working on a CNC balsa
cutting rig. So, my interests do range from build it yourself to industrial
iron, but all from the home hobby perspective.
