I've had some experience using stepper motors in an industrial control
environment (not CNC). When a stepper starts losing steps, it generally
means that the available torque is close to the torque required to move the
object. It's been a while, but I seem to remember that resonance issues
cause the motor to lose control, not just a few random steps.

but
at say 12ipm the mill will miss steps occasionally and randomly. Maybe I'm
just hitting a resonance at that speed? I've been sneaking up in speed,
but this weekend I'll just try a significantly higher rapid speed and see
what happens.
