Yes to the concept that a servo controller can be designed for error correction and notification. I'm not sure what EMC can do with such notification as to any corrected or uncorrected errors. The concept of making the motor driver and controller appear as if they are just a really fast stepper for the purpose of interfacing to popular software may make a great deal of since. I have no experience with the software side of this. I'm a hardware type. I tend to view the world from that point of view, which is why I'm not ready to start soldering until I understand how to fit the software side of things.
If others have been working on this to the point that they have a good answer at hand, I may best spend my efforts locating a pile of suitable motors and pass one the information. There are several configurations for such a project and I think it might be possible to make one board that does the DRO business as a stand alone application, or does it all. I am not familar with the DRO work that has already been done. I understand that some hardware and software have been developed by members of our group. Can you give me a short summary of the basic components for the DRO projects to date, which mates up with a PC? If anyone sees that I'm considering doing what is either in process or already done, please let me know.
Dave,
I was surfing around the Oriental Motor site yesterday. They came out with
a new stepper motor driver combination (called Alpha Step) that has an
encoder feed back circuit. The driver's onboard brain corrects any missed
steps on it's own and raises a flag to signal a following error if it tries
unsuccesfully to correct the difference. Perhaps a servo can be set up in
that way where the driver hardware takes care of all house keeping? It seems
then that a stepper based control program can run servo's. I believe Dan
Mauch and Bill W's Servo Lite is such a system. I have the information on
order from him. Perhaps Dan could shed more light on this before any more
re-inventing is done. I believe also that between Tom Kulaga and Dan Mauch
and/or others, there is another effort to build a servo controller in the
works. WAnliker, Am I mistaken?
