Bertho, hopefully your post will get some good ideas
coming forth. The concept of running a closed loop
servo motor system from step and direction signals
is becoming quite common, and many motion control
hardware manufacturers are producing products to fill
that need. I guess a person buying those products
has the desire to obtain some of the desirable features
of the servo system hardware, and to be able to use
it with existing step/direction software (probably Windoze)

Servo amps seem to come in 2 flavors, PWM and Analog,
and the schematics that I have seen are very simple, and
there are numerous sites on the web with these schematics.
I have taken apart so called servo motors, and just plain
brush type motors, and the only real differance I found
other than the encoder was the higher quality which would
directly relate to performance. The STG board is a fair cost
factor, but when you have free software, that cost does not
seem to bad, especially if you are making money from you
CNC setup.
